WHY HUMAN IS CRITICAL?

For decades, scientists had to rely on rodent cell lines to study the mechanisms of insulin secretion and the origin of beta cell dysfunction and destruction observed in human diabetes. This despite major differences in insulin secretion and glucose homeostasis related to species-specific gene expression programs as well as sensitivity to inflammation or autoimmunity.
